Growing Up Country

Country living came my way, On fertile ground, I toiled each day. Planting fields in springtime’s light, Learning grew as crops took flight. A southern breakfast, dawn to start, Then to the fields with willing heart. The north wind blew, the seasons spun, Too much work and too little fun. In pouring rain, we fed the stock, Through biting wind and weather’s knock. The mud clung thick—a stubborn stain, Then sun broke through to ease the strain. Homemade meals at morning light, Fresh-dug taters, seasoned right. A feast laid out come mid-July, With watermelon wine to try. A bond was formed through nature’s way, A sleeping bag where moonlight lay. Thunder rolled, coyotes cried, Storm clouds tore through the sky that night. Country life shaped who I am, Calloused hands from working land. Through trials, toil, and winds that blew, Growing up country—the life I knew.
